Diablo 2: Resurrected - 'Tools of the Trade' Quest Guide

During Act 1 of Diablo 2: Resurrected, players will either pick up the Tools of the Trade quest from Rogue Encampment blacksmith Charsi, or activate it while exploring the Tamoe Highlands. However players got the quest, there is only one way to clear it, and that's by defeating The Smith and collecting the Horadric Malus, then returning it to Charsi.

The Quest Log says this powerful tool can be found in the Monastery Barracks, but unless players have been doing a lot of extra exploring, they won't know where this location is yet. This guide will detail exactly how to find the Monastery Barracks in Diablo 2: Resurrected, and where to locate the Hodradic Malus from The Smith within it.

Monastery Barracks Location in Diablo 2

If players haven't unlocked the Outer Cloister waypoint yet, they should travel to the Black Marsh location. From here, search the area for an area called the Tamoe Highlands.

As the maps in Diablo 2: Resurrected are randomly generated, there isn't an exact compass location players can go to find it. Following the rough paths outlined in the dirt can help, and keeping an eye on where the minimap has been filled in is always helpful when searching for a new area. This is a small but useful beginner tip for Diablo 2: Resurrected.

The Monastery Barracks in Diablo 2: Resurrected are found in the Tamoe Highlands area, which is also a great farming spot for getting a 4-Socket Shield in Diablo 2 on harder difficulties.

Just like The Black Marsh before it, players should continue exploring the grasslands until they come across the Monastery Gate. Don't try and enter the building through the large locked gate; instead, find a smaller door located in the middle of the building. The Barracks are then found by exploring inside.

Once players have entered the Monastery, they will be in the Outer Cloister area. They should explore the nearby surroundings to locate its waypoint and make traveling back here easier. They can also use it as a free travel location if they want to go back to the Rogue Encampment to sort and sell their loot, or make the most of Diablo 2 mercenaries and hire one to help with combat.

Once again, the Outer Cloister area will be randomly generated. So, keep exploring and battling within its walls until the Monastery Barracks have been found. It's this location that contains the named enemy The Smith, who will drop the Horadric Malus once defeated. It's important to note that this demon will only drop the Malus if players have resued Deckard Cain from Tristam (this area also has an item needed to make the Secret Cow Level in Diablo 2), and have reached player Level 8.

If playing with friends, only one person can pick up the tool, but when they return it to Charsi in the Rogue Encampment, it will move the quest along for all party members as long as they are also player Level 8. However, Diablo 2: Resurrected has a disappointing lack of local co-op support, so this can only be done if playing on separate systems. Talk to Cain after Tools of the Trade is completed to start the Sisters of The Slaughter questline.

What to Imbue for Tools of the Trade Quest Reward

Upon returning the Horadric Malus to Charsi, she will imbue a piece of normal equipment, turning it into a rare item with randomly selected abilities. No Magic, Rare, Set, or Unique items can be chosen. Players can imbue a good piece of equipment at this point if they want, but it's also possible to leave the reward until they get better items later on.

It's best to do this if players want the most out of their late-game builds, as imbuing a piece of equipment with Charsi can only be done once per difficulty. Using these rewards strategically will also greatly help when Diablo 2: Resurrected starts Ladder mode.

Diadems and Circlets are the most common items chosen for imbuing by repeat Diablo 2 players. This is because their high quality means they have a better chance to roll some impressive stats. If players picked any item just to clear the quest on Normal difficulty, don't worry. It won't affect a build too harshly this early on. However, once Nightmare difficulty is reached, it is best to optimize quest rewards to make farming spots in Diablo 2: Resurrected and defeating bosses as swift as possible.

Diablo 2: Resurrected is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
