Since its inception, The Game Awards has become one of the premiere annual events for the entire gaming industry. The show serves as a celebration of the year in gaming, highlighting the best titles of the year, and giving audiences a taste of what's to come from some of their favorite developers. As fall rolls around, audiences now know when they will be able to tune in for 2021's edition of The Game Awards before the year ends.
The Game Awards began in 2014 headed up by games industry personality Geoff Keighley in collaboration with the biggest names in game development and media, such as Nintendo and IGN. It served as the spiritual successor to the Spike Video Game Awards which ran from 2003 to 2013 as the network's major award show in the vain of the MTV Movie Awards. While the 2020 Game Awards still took place, the coronavirus pandemic forced it to be a largely virtual event with only a handful of people present in studio while most recipients and presenters called in from home.

The 2021 Game Awards will be back in front of a live audience when it takes place on Thursday, December 9. It will stream from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, which hosted the event from 2015 to 2019. Alongside the awards, audiences can expect musical performances and several world premieres as part of the show.
It's poised to be a big year for the event, especially coming off the success of 2020's Game Awards. The show garnered over 83 million views online, the most in the event's history, despite being a virtual event.
The Last of Us 2 ran away with it, winning 11 awards including Game of the Year, which provoked a polarizing response from audiences. Hades, Ghost of Tsushima, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake were among the games behind The Last of Us Part 2 to walk away from the show with multiple awards.
2021's edition is poised to be one of the more interesting shows in its history due, in part, to how COVID-19 impacted the releases of several major titles. That said, there are still several major titles audiences can expect to see nominated in one form or another when the show rolls around. Don't be surprised to see the list of nominees include games like Deathloop, Hitman 3, Psychonauts 2, No More Heroes 3, Life is Strange: True Colors, It Takes Two, and Returnal.
