Battlefield 2042's open beta is about to begin, and players are already giving DICE feedback about changes should be made. One of the biggest improvements Battlefield 2042 needs are revisions to its user interface (UI), which DICE confirms is coming at launch.
Battlefield 2042 has recently been trudging through a minefield of controversies, with every new bit of information or gameplay seemingly hurt the game's image. There was Battlefield 2042's strange grenade controller mapping a few weeks ago, where the binding would force players to sacrifice their mobility unless they play with a "claw" grip. More recently, DICE announced that Battlefield 2042 will have an always active profanity filter for in-game text, without options to toggle it, which many players think is unnecessary for the longtime "Mature" rated franchise. Now it seems there are problems with the game's UI, which is a major issue, as bad menu design can easily make or break a game's accessibility.

DICE has confirmed that UI improvements are coming to Battlefield 2042 after a viral video displayed the game's current hard to read menus. In the video posted by SaintsBeatEagles on the Battlefield 2042 subreddit, the user is navigating the game's graphic settings menu, where it is rather difficult to determine whether certain options are toggled or not. The OFF/ON controls for film grain are signaled by black when it's OFF, and blue when it's ON. When SaintsBeatEagles hovers down over the setting, however, the UI colors swap, such that when the setting is supposed to be OFF, it could be perceived as ON.
One of the producers at DICE responded to the video, explaining why it is happening and what improvements are coming. The producer known as F8RGE writes, "Been a lot of improvements to the options menu for launch. The above video is a bug that has been squished. Nuances that come with a build that's a few months old." They go on to explain that DICE has done a lot of reorganization of the menus by moving content around and rewording descriptions so that the UI is overall much clearer and easier to understand. Balancing presentation and information is what UIs are all about, and it sounds like Battlefield 2042 is headed in that direction.
Battlefield 2042's open beta is already receiving criticism across the gaming community, and with the game releasing next month, DICE has a lot of work to do it seems. This producer was kind enough to speak about this issue and hopefully appease those who were in that discussion, but fans should remember that not every problem will have as transparent a response as this one did. The beta is going to be a great opportunity for DICE to see where the game is at, and where it must focus to get the game ready in these final weeks. It's not easy making video games, especially not one as big this.
Battlefield 2042 releases on November 19 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
