Most games have a path set out for players to progress in the story mode. However, Bravely Default 2 gives its players a bit more freedom. In Bravely Default 2's chapter 4, players get to decide which dungeons and bosses they can fight next. Should the player choose to defend Halcyonia from Holograd, they will face Lonsdale the Bastion.
As a Bastion, Lonsdale boasts useful defensive skills and can counter the player's moves. Fighting him without strengthened Jobs and a solid strategy will only make things difficult. When it comes to Lonsdale, slow and steady wins the race.
A stronger version of Lonsdale can be fought at the first Portal in northwest Halcyonia later in the game for the Bastion Asterisk.

Lonsdale doesn't have allies with him in his boss fight, so players won't have to worry about an enemy healer. The trade-off is Lonsdale's strength. If players aren't careful, Lonsdale can easily sweep their team without much effort. Here are Lonsdale's stats/weaknesses and abilities:
HP | 88,319 |
Vulnerabilities (Elemental) | Dark |
Vulnerabilities (Weapons) | Daggers |
Half Damage (Elemental) | Light, Lightning, Earth |
Half Damage (Weapons) | Spears |
Immunity (Elemental) | N/A |
Immunity (Weapons) | N/A |
Absorbs | N/A |
Wall | +25% Physical and Magical Defense buff on self. |
Corporal Punishment | Inflicts heavy damage to a single target. Also used when countering physical (Default) attacks. |
Holy Light/Light of Justice | Inflicts Light damage. |
Rampart | Grants immunity to 1 physical attack. |
Vallation | Grants immunity to 1 magical attack. |
The player should avoid bringing magic users to this boss fight. Some suggested Jobs and abilities to unlock prior to this boss are:
Jobs | Shieldmaster | Red Mage | Thief | Phantom |
Sub-Jobs | Spiritmaster | White Mage | Freelancer | (Player's Choice) |
Abilities (Jobs) | Defender of the People (Shieldmaster) | Reprisal (Shieldmaster) | Godspeed Strike (Thief) | Shroud (Phantom) |
Abilities (Sub) | Regeneration (Spiritmaster) | Curaga (White Mage) | Square One (Freelancer) | Healthbringer (Spiritmaster) |
Don't underestimate Lonsdale's basic attacks and avoid using the Default command because he will counter those. Avoid bringing more than one mage because their weak defense will not be able to withstand Lonsdale. However, a Healer will need to be on the team during this boss fight.
To counter against Lonsdale's Corporal Punishment, have a Shieldmaster use Reprisal and act as the tank. Additionally, Defender of the People will block up to 3 attacks.
Use a Thief's Godspeed Strike and a Phantom's Shroud. Remember: Lonsdale is also vulnerable to Daggers, so take advantage of this.
Magic can be useful in this fight as long as the mages aren't pulling the aggro. Lonsdale can't counter magic unless he uses Wall or Vallation, which increase Magic Defense by 25% and block 1 magical attack accordingly. A Red Mage can whittle away at Lonsdale's HP while the Thief and Phantom dish out the heavier damage.
A Freelancer's Square One ability will remove Lonsdale's buffs. Get rid of Wall as soon as possible when Lonsdale goes to buff himself or this fight will drag out longer than it should.

Equip HP-boosting and Light-resistant armor.
Lonsdale doesn't drop any armor or weapons. Instead, players will collect the Bastion Asterisk and gain access to the Bastion Job.
