Diablo is a deadly boss battle in Diablo 2: Resurrected if players go in underprepared or under-leveled. He has high resistances, even on Normal difficulty, and an arsenal of attacks that can kill characters in mere seconds.
Thankfully, as the original version has been out for over 20 years, there are some established strategies for defeating the Lord of Terror in Diablo 2: Resurrected. This doesn't mean players can cheese the fight, however, and they need to make sure they are at a high enough level with appropriate gear equipped before attempting the fight.

There are two important gear requirements players must meet to make the Diablo boss fight in Diablo 2: Resurrected as easy as possible: equip an item with the "Cannot be Frozen" ability, and have as close to maximum Fire Resist as possible. In Normal difficulty, it will also help to have a good amount of Lightning Resistance as well, but it's not as important as fire, as most of the boss' moves are fire-based. Some gear comes with good resistances already, but it can be further enhanced by adding good Runewords in Diablo 2: Resurrected.
Filling the inventory and belt with as many Health Potions as possible is definitely required before starting the Diablo fight, especially for melee characters, like the Whirlwind Barbarian build in Diablo 2: Resurrected. It's also very important to bring Stamina Potions as well, as there is one devastating move that players will have to run from a lot during the fight. How many to bring is dependent on how big a character's Stamina Meter is.
Beating Diablo on Normal difficulty in Diablo 2: Resurrected is one of the hardest challenges in the game. Players won't have as high-level gear as they will when fighting him on Nightmare and Hell, which means they can't rely on superior stats to see them through the fight.
There are two essential tactics to beating Diablo in Diablo 2: Resurrected: run from his Red Lightning Hose attack, and create a Town Portal just outside the boss arena. Most of Diablo's attacks are fire-based, so with enough resistance, players can continue to attack him while using health potions without too much difficulty. However, when Diablo indicates he is about to use his Red Lightning Hose attack, players must try and avoid it completely. It's an incredibly powerful lighting and physical attack that can kill characters in an instant. This is what makes Diablo one of the most difficult bosses in Diablo 2: Resurrected.
Players will know right before Diablo is about to cast Red Lightning Hose, because he will ready both of his hands in front of him, instead of raising them in the air as he does with most of his other attacks. This move is cast several times in a row, so be prepared to run in the opposite direction once Diablo has used the move again.
Players will inevitably need to use a Town Portal in Diablo 2: Resurrected while fighting Diablo to stock up on more potions, but they shouldn't make one within the boss area. This is because Diablo likes to cast Bone Prison on players to immobilize them as soon as they return from town. Thankfully, he will never go outside of the central area of the Chaos Sanctuary, so players are free to make a portal in any one of its 4 halls. Running to these halls is also a good idea if players need to take a break, or fill their belt with potions again.
Beating Diablo on Nightmare or Hell difficulty is an easier fight with good gear, but his attacks are slightly different. All of the above advice should be followed, but ranged attackers, like an Archer Amazon build in Diablo 2: Resurrected should be careful of his Red Lightning Hose move, as it will only hurt players attacking from a distance. Melee characters won't actually receive any damage from it if they are close enough to Diablo. Equipping gear with high Lightning Resistance and Damage Reduction can help players survive the attack.
If players are really stuck, and can't defeat Diablo no matter what they do, they can respec their character with the Token of Absolution in Diablo 2: Resurrected, or talk to Akara in the Rogue Encampment town in Act 1. This shouldn't be done without thinking it over first, as it's very hard to make a Token of Absolution.
Diablo 2: Resurrected is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
