There’s no arguing that Squid Game has taken the world by storm. With its newfound popularity, it’s not surprising to see it starting to encroach on video games. Not officially, admittedly, but die-hard fans have already come up with ways to express their love for the Netflix drama and have fun with fellow fans, whether it be through a self-made Call of Duty: Warzone challenge or custom-made maps in Fortnite. So, obviously, game developers and publishers are likely looking in to capitalize on the show’s sudden success.
No official tie-in game has been announced (yet), but industry insider Tom Henderson has said on Twitter some kind of Squid Game type game is in development. He doesn’t know who the developer is, only adding that it is different to Mediatonic’s Fall Guys.

Fall Guys does have a similar concept to Squid Game, as both see a large group of players participate in various minigames to win a grand prize. The key difference, however, is that Fall Guys has a much more cartoony aesthetic, where the worst thing that can happen is falling off an obstacle course and into some pink goop. In Squid Game, failure means death.
It’s worth noting as well that Henderson doesn’t explicitly say that this video game is directly based on Squid Game. So, it’s possible that this supposed project isn’t using the Squid Game license and is instead simply inspired by the show. While that may be disappointing to some, fans of the show could still be interested if it shares the basic concept, especially if Squid Game never gets an official tie-in.
A proper Squid Game video game sounds like a no brainer, but the show so far consists of only one season and Netflix has yet to announce a second season. Considering its popularity, the odds of a season 2 are very likely. But in case it doesn’t, it’d be much harder for publishers to push a Squid Game video game in a year or two’s time when the hype has died down significantly and with no second season to piggyback off. An original IP, on the other hand, would probably stand a better chance.
This is all hypothetical, but Henderson has proven to be a reliable source of information in the past. He shared numerous details about Battlefield 2042 long before it was announced, many of which turned out to be correct. More recently, he shared the codename for the 2022 Call of Duty game, which was soon corroborated by VGC.
Squid Game is available on Netflix.
