New World Faction 'The Covenant' Explained

New World, the fantasy MMORPG from Amazon Games, launched this past week on PC. The beginning of a new MMO is always an exciting time as players spread out across the game world, discovering secrets and joining different factions with potentially large impacts on the narrative. New World has three of the latter to choose from, but doesn't make players pick one until after the prologue.

The mysterious Syndicate, warlike Marauders, and zealous Covenant are all fighting for control of New World's map. Of the three, players who like the idea of embarking on a fanatical crusade to rid the island of heretics will feel most at home in the Covenant. With its religious zeal and holy mission, the divine order will also appeal to those who prefer to player Cleric and Paladin-type characters. Once players have picked the Covenant, they'll be able to join Covenant-based Companies, but won't be able to change to a different faction for 120 days.

Who Are the Covenant in New World?

Represented by a logo which depicts a golden spiked fist flanked by angel's wings, the Covenant is a militaristic divine order that has been tasked with cleansing the island of Aeternum. Specifically, the soldiers and priests of the Covenant are told that by destroying heretics and defilers who have inhabited Aeternum, they will restore the island's true holy nature. Given Aeternum is corrupted by an ancient, otherworldly evil and is inhabited by a variety of undead, monstrous, and unholy creatures, the Covenant have their work cut out for them.

As one of New World's three factions, the Covenant finds itself in a constant struggle for dominance against the Syndicate and the Marauders. Players who have joined the Covenant will be able to influence this war through PvP combat, and by taking forts in the game world. For those players who prefer PvE gameplay, it's also possible to support the Covenant's goals by joining a Company and providing PvP players with resources and support. Either of these activities will allow players to build Reputation within the divine order, beginning their climb up the ranks.

Why Join the Covenant in New World?

Without the diversity of alternate races that are commonly found in most MMORPGs, all players in New World start as human colonists and explorers. Because of this, there isn't a huge amount of difference between the Syndicate, Covenant, and Marauders in gameplay terms, certainly when compared to factions like the Alliance and the Horde in Blizzard's World of Warcraft. Each of the different factions has a related color and crest, but the main feature that Covenant players will notice is their unique advancement quests, and the special faction armor that they are able to unlock.

When players reach certain levels in New World and gain enough Reputation within their Covenant, they'll be able to advance in rank. Starting out as an Initiate, Covenant players will become a Templar, Excubitor, Lumen, and finally an Adjudicator. Each of these comes with a new set of Covenant Gear for players to unlock. For the Covenant this Gear definitely has a inquisition theme, with the top-tier outfit being a classic witchfinder, perfect for delivering holy wrath to the heretics of Aeternum.

New World is available now for PC.
